Welcome to my Backlinks Hydra review. Hydra is the newest product by Terry Kyle, who’s one of the two guys behind the backlinks forum, the guy behind the famous “60 day backlinks experiment” on the Warrior Forum and an all-around SEO and link-building Ninja.

This review, as you may have already noted, is quite unusual for me, since I’ve been concentrating on tools and software almost exclusively (after I was almost constantly disappointed with the info-products on making money online).

Backlinks Hydra is an info product. But it’s different from most info-products in two significant ways: 1) it’s very specific. It’s not about how to make money online in general, but rather it’s about high-end, state-of-the-art, advanced (not to say extreme) link-building. 2) It’s awesome (sorry if I just spoilered the ending of the review, here).

Read on to see what it’s all about…

Backlinks Hydra Overview

Name:

Backlinks Hydra

Creator:

Terry Kyle

Medium:

Info-Product (videos and PDF)

Price:

$97

Backlinks Hydra consists of one PDF document and two series of videos (one group of videos are “basics” and “mistakes to avoid” type of videos and the other group are about the Hydra tactics in detail). In addition, you also receive a free copy of Backlinks Blackbelt, Terry’s previous product and the predecessor to Hydra, in many ways.

Is it Any Good?

Yes, yes it is.

Here’s why: What you learn in Backlinks Hydra is completely new and original. If you’re fed up with products that just re-hash information that’s been around forever, you’ll love this. And it’s not only old ideas with a new twist, either. Most of the techniques in Hydra were never discussed anywhere before Terry brought them up. Granted, if you’ve been following Terry’s forum posts and are familiar with Backlinks Blackbelt, some of the techniques you’ll already be familiar with. But if you haven’t then I’m willing to bet that at least 90% of what you learn in Hydra will be new to you, even if you’re and experienced SEO’er.

The information in the product is top-notch and the delivery of the product, in videos and PDF format, is also very good.

So, is this a complete and unquestioning endorsement from me?

Nope.

Backlinks Hydra is Not for Everyone…

There’s no question about the quality of this product. However, I want to make it very clear that these are advanced link-building techniques that are discussed, here. If you’re completely new to online marketing and SEO in particular, I’m pretty sure the information in Hydra will simply be overwhelming and only of limited usefulness.

Another factor to keep in mind is that, to fully implement all of the Hydra tactics, you need to have some disposable income (to spend on the recommended tools, buying domains and more). Some of the tactics can be used for free link-building, by the way, but certainly not all of them.

So, here’s my verdict:

Verdict

If you’re a “newbie”, think twice about investing in this course. If you already know a thing or two about SEO, then it’s definitely something you want to look at, to expand your horizon. Finally, if you are already making money from your SEO efforts, then Backlinks Hydra is what you should spend some of that money on. It will doubtlessly help you get more success, better rankings and consequently more money from your SEO efforts.

Any more questions about this product? Just ask away in the comments and I’ll get back to you as quickly as possible.

Cheers,

In the interview, Terry reveals some of his coolest methods for building backlinks and talks about what you can do to win the (often difficult) battle for that number one position, even for pretty tough keywords. He also talks about some of his experiences with buying aged, high-PR domains and and different ways to utilize these for backlink building.

An interesting and, as far as I know, unannounced change has just taken place with the Google Keyword Research Tool: If you go and check the search volumes for your targeted keywords, you’ll likely find that all of the numbers are far lower now than they were before.

The change affects all search volume numbers. The ones we’re interested in for SEO purposes are generally the exact match volumes, though. In some cases, the drop in search volume is dramatic, with numbers being only fractions of what they were just a few hours or days ago and in other cases the changes are less dramatic. From the quick scan I had through my keywords list, it seemes that all of the search volume numbers dropped by at least 50%.

So, what’s going on, here?

Well, it’s been known for a long time that the search volume numbers presented in the keyword tool tend to be inaccurate. More precisely, they tend to be inaccurate on the side of exaggaration. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of someone getting surprisingly more visitors than expected when hitting the number one spot for a targeted keyword. On the other hand, I’ve often heard of disappointingly low traffic coming to the number one spot of a sought-after keyword.

There’s a thread here on the Warrior Forum and another one on the topic here on Backlinks Forum. From the developing discussion on both of these threads, it seems like the numbers are now more accurate, overall. So, the simple explanation for what happened with the keyword research tool is this: It was inaccurate before and now it’s fixed.

But what are the implications? So far, there hasn’t been an official statement by Google, so we don’t know what was changed or why. Did they simply improve the filtering for automated, non-human queries? If so, does that mean that there are far more non-human queries to Google than there are actual searches done by human users?

And what does this mean for niche marketers and SEO’ers? Will the change in numbers impact what kind of keywords they go after or even change/invalidate entire strategies? Also: Is that part of the reason for the change?

And for some more unpleasant implications: What does the change mean for Google itself? Is it actually getting only a fraction of the traffic we formerly believed? Have they been deceiving advertisers with grossly inflated search numbers?

Don’t get me wrong: I’m not predicting the end of SEO, here (as I’m sure many will…). Traffic volumes themselves haven’t changed, only the search volume estimates have. Still, it will be interesting to see what develops of this. Also: Prepare for some epic moaning and complaining as well as apocaliptic forum threads (particularly the Warrior Forum is a favourite for those).

What’s happened to your keywords? Will you change anything, now that the numbers are different? Let me know in the comments.

Cheers,

This review has been a long time coming. SERPAssist has easily been one of the most in-demand and most talked-about link-building tools since it was released and I’ve never before had so many people specifically request I review a particular product.

So, what’s so special about SERPAssist? Is it just another gimmick or can it truly set itself apart from other link-builders? And is it poweful enough to compete with (or even surpass) SENuke?

Read on to get the full scope.

SERPAssist Overview

Name:

SERPAssist

Creator:

Dave ? (last name not known)

Medium:

Link Building Tool

Price:

$77/month

SERPAssist is a tool that automates certain aspects of link-building. This is certainly not a novelty. However, the user interface and approach used in SERPAssist are very different from what you may be used to with the typical submitters and automators out there.

You can create complete backlink networks using a simple diagram tool and then send that complete network to SERPAssist to build. To see exactly what I mean, check out this video:

SERPAssist Link-Building Features

As demonstrated in the video, the thing that sets SERPAssist apart from it’s competitors is the unique way in which the link-building is automated. You can map out an entire backlinking campaign using an easy drag-and-drop system and all of the account creation, registration, CAPTCHA solving and submission tasks are done completely automatically. It can take several days for the tasks to get completed, but since there’s no extra work on the part of the user required, that really isn’t much of a concern.

The only real work you need to do is create spun articles to post to the free blogs and embed your backlinks within. Here’s an example of a link-network that can be created with just a few minutes of work, in SERPAssist (assuming you’ve already written your spun content):

There are three types of backlinks you can build to your sites, using this tool:

In-post links from free blogs (e.g. LiveJournal, tumblr, vox)

Bookmark links from social bookmarking sites

Profile links from forum profile pages

Problems…

As impressive as the technology behind all this is, there are some major issues with the software, at the time of this writing.

For example, SERPAssist apparently only submits to four different forums for profile links. That’s not exactly a wealth of link sources. And the profile links don’t show up in the URL reports, so there’s no way to check how long they stay alive. Because of this, the profile links are practically a non-feature, at this point.

Bookmarks all come from only 7 different sites and they also don’t show up in the URL report. In my eyes, this makes the bookmarks more of a neat extra than a full feature of their own. What you’re left with are the free blog posts and those also come with some limitations: On several of the blogging platforms, SERPAssist is unable to submit more than one post, meaning that you’ll have lots of new blogs with just one post and only a few “growing” blogs that have new content added to them as you keep using them to build more links.

Clearly, a blog that gets updated regularly is more valuable as a source of links than lots of single-page blogs…

So, in essence, what you get with SERPAssist is a very sophisticated tool for building link-wheels and link networks using free blogging platforms.

In my opinion, SERPAssist has the potential to become the most powerful and useful link-building tool ever, but it’s definitely not there yet.

Results

I’ve seen good results using SERPAssist in conjunction with other link-building tools and methods. Unfortunately, as long as it’s mixed in with other tools, it’s very hard to tell how much of a ranking increase can be attributed to it.

Because of this, I am currently testing how much of a ranking improvement I can get on pages that I’m promoting with SERPAssist exclusively. I will update this section of the review as soon as enough time has passed for some results (or lack thereof) to show up.

Conclusion

I’ll write a final conclusion and decide whether I can recommend SERPAssist once I’ve gathered more results.

SEOPressor installs like any plugin for WordPress does. Once you’ve set it up, it has two funcions: Automation and “Consultation”. Here are those two features in more detail:

SEOPressor for On-Page SEO Automation

For “normal” or manual blogging use, the plugin can automatically add bold, underline, and italic text-decoration to your keyword throghout a post or page (in this case, you specify the target keyword for each individual case). It can also add the keyword to the post or page title and it can add it as an alt-text to any images you include in the post.

If you are familiar with the principles of on-page optimization, you’ll recognize these as some important factors that search engines pay attention to. The text-decoration is one factor that helps search engines determine what keywords to rank your page for, the page title is perhaps the most important on-page SEO factor and image alt-tags can also help keep all of your content relevant to the target keyword.

For auto-blogs, you can also enter one or several keywords and set SEOPressor to automatically text-decorate those keywords as they appear in each new post.

On-the-Fly SEO “Advice”

The second major feature this plugin brings with it is that it keeps track of all on-page factors for any post or page you create or edit and presents you with a “score-card” and suggestions for improving your SEO. Here’s an example of what that looks like:

As you can see, it’s telling me which factors I’m getting right and where there’s still room for improvement. It also keeps track of the keyword density on the page (i.e. how often does the target keyword occur compared to the total number of words) and warns the user if the density is too low or too high.

I particularly like this feature because I’m too lazy to calculate keyword density myself, but I’m aware that it shouldn’t be too high. So, before using SEOPressor, I was always a bit nervous about this factor. Can I repeat the keyword again or do I need to change the sentence around, so that I can use a different word? Is this too much or too little? Now, each time I hit “Save Draft” or “Update”, the scorecard refreshes and I see exactly where I’m standing.

Here’s a video with a quick demonstration of how SEOPressor is used. I also briefly talk about the actual test-results I got with it, so make sure you watch this:

Complaining

Of course, no review on RQR would be complete without me complaining about something, so here goes:

1) There are one or two suggestions that SEOPressor makes, that I don’t agree with. For one, it advocates “Page Rank Hoarding”, by adding a “nofollow” tag to your external links. I don’t agree with this for several reasons, not the least of which is that it’s bascially “unethical”. You want others to link to you with dofollow links, right? So, don’t attach nofollows to your links. I’ll explain more about why I’m against PR hoarding in a separate article.

2) Many WordPress themes automatically place your post title in H1 tags. SEOPressor will still tell you that you don’t have your keyword in an H1 tag and that you should add one, in this case. Not tragic, but not optimal, either.

3) At $97, the price for this plugin is pretty steep. While I wouldn’t say that it’s not worth it, it’s just a price point that certainly doesn’t feel like a bargain. The price and utility of the plugin clearly makes this kind of a “luxury purchase”.

SEOPressor: Conclusion

Overall, SEOPressor does what it’s supposed to do: It helps you with on-page optimization which in turn helps with getting your pages ranked. On-page SEO is an important factor, but it alone will not get your pages ranked in the top spots for any keywords worth pursuing. It will, however, make your journey to the top quicker.

In my opinion, whether you should purchase SEOPressor or not comes down to your budget: If $97 is a large investment for you, then I can’t recommend getting it.

If you use WordPress on a regular basis and have several sites out there that are already generating good revenue, then I see no reason not to buy SEOPressor. It’s a very neat tool and it’s just nice to have the ongoing feedback while you create or edit posts. Use it on sites that are already making you money and you’ll make your investment back in no time.

Wow. Just wow.

That was my first reaction to Perpetual Traffic Formula, or rather the free report, which you can get here and which is the first part of a launch sequence for Ryan Deiss’ next product.

The landing page is really slick and awesome looking and the report itself has great production quality as well. As for the content? Marketing at it’s best.

Read on to see the genius way in which this system is positioned as something new and different in what may well be the most saturated market ever… (video after the break)

The premise is this: “SEO is actually really easy”.

Think about that for a second. How many products are there, that have this basic premise? How many products promise to teach you some super-simple SEO secret? Tons of products have this premise because so many people are after “free” traffic (still need to pay for all the SEO ebooks, so it ain’t exactly free…).

What does Mr. Deiss do to make his product stand out from the crowd? Well, check out the report and be amazed. He brakes down SEO to three factors, one of which is “new” in that no one has talked about it before. Not in a big product, anyway. That element is “activity”. In other words, he says that Google checks for human activity on sites and uses that data to adjust rankings. More human activity equals better rankings.

Is this true? I don’t know. It’s certainly not true that human activity is necessary for good rankings. But whether it helps or not, I honestly don’t know. I’ll be testing it, for sure.

There are a few things that struck me as particularly interesting about the sales-process that’s going on with this product. More on this in the following video:

To get the free report, go here.

How did you like the report? And what about the marketing style? Is it appealing to you?
Finally, do you have any experience with whether on-site activity makes a difference to rankings? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Cheers,

The feared “duplicate content penalty” is a subject that keeps popping up whenever people are discussing SEO, link building and particularly article marketing. I already published a short post on this subject, including a video showing a Google representative stating, in no uncertain terms, that there is no such thing as a duplicate content penalty. In this post, I want to take a different angle and offer a possible explanation for why the myth about the dcp is such a pervasive one.

Omission From Search Listings

There is something that frequently happens in Google search results, that perhaps could be misinterpreted as some sort of penalty. As an example, I just did a quick search on Google for the name of this blog and “Best Spinner”. The reason I did this is because I know that I have referenced to the program called The Best Spinner in several posts already, so there’s bound to be a whole bunch of listings – some of them from posts, at least one of them on the homepage (at the time of this writing) and so on.

Here is what Google returned:

As you can see, there’s a double listing of results on this domain. After that, however, results from other places around the web are displayed. As I’ve marked with the arrow, there’s a “Show more results from richquickreview.com” option. Let’s see what happens when I click it:

Now, I get seven listings and there’s a new option at the bottom for showing all of the listings on richquickreview, for this search term.

Oh no! All of my Best Spinner posts, save for two, have been penalized by Google and they aren’t showing up in the search results! Time to PANIC!

Of course, what’s going on here is not a penalty of any kind. Google generally don’t show more than two results for one and the same domain. And they generally don’t show more than two results from different domains, if the content is identical.

If you write an article and submit it to a dozen different article directories, unchanged, you’ll get a similar result when you do a search for it: The results will typically list your article on one or two directories, followed by the option to show more of the results that are hidden, because they are identical.

The important point here is that this is not a penalty. The omitted pages are all indexed by Google, they are all flowing pagerank and no one is getting their sites “sandboxed” because of duplicate content.

Obviously, the pages won’t all get listed in the results, because who would want to find several pages of the same article as a result for a search query?

Chasing (Long) Tail

This is where article spinning comes in. The point of spinning articles is not to “avoid the duplicate content penalty” as way too many sales-pitches for spinning tools would have you believe, the point is to grab more long-tail traffic. If you write an article, spin it’s content and then distribute it to a few dozen or even a few hundred online properties, it’s a bit like casting a wide net out into unknown waters: You don’t know where the fish are, but by pure chance you’re bound to catch a few.

All of your spun articles will consist of different sequences of words and every time someone “out there” on the Internet happens to search for a string of words that are present in one of your article variations, it’s likely that that variation will show up in the search results. And thus, you catch another fish.

I hope this clarifies the whole dupe-content subject a bit. If you have any further questions, please leave a comment and I’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

Cheers,

This post covers the most important basics you need to know about backlinks. Getting backlinks to your web pages is an essential part of search engine optimization (particularly for Google). However, not all backlinks are equal. In this post, I describe the three things that matter most, in terms of backlinks. These three factors are: Amount, value and anchor text.

Note: If you prefer watching a video to reading, scroll down to see my video accompanying this post.

Here’s a short description explaining each of the three factors:

Amount

This first factor is the simplest. The higher the number of backlinks pointing to your site, the better this is for your ranking.

The thinking behind this is simply that every link to your site represents something like a “vote”. Someone linking to your site is basically saying: “Check this out, there’s something worth seeing there.”
And the more people are saying that there’s something worth seeing on your site, the better your site must be.

On a perfectly innocent Internet (what a weird concept), this would be all it takes to determine the rank of websites. But because there are many people with commercial interests online and it’s fairly easy to build links yourself, determining rank based solely on the amount of backlinks would just result in those pages whose owners have the most powerful link-spamming bots working for them to rank highest.

This is where the other two factors come in.

–

Value

This is the most debated and most elusive factor determining website ranks. The value of any given backlink is dependent on many different variables and no one, apart from a few engineers at Google, knows exactly how link value is determined.

Here are some factors we can be pretty certain about:

Page Authority
A link coming from a high authority website is more valuable than one coming from a low authority website. How the authority of the website is determined, is an entire subject of its own. You can assume that the more traffic a website is getting, the more people are participating on that website and the higher the Google PR of that website is, the more valuable a link from it will be.
–
As example, a link coming from a blog with thousands of subscribers and many people participating in the comments is more valuable than a link coming from a blog that hasn’t been updated in months and sees hardly any traffic.
–

Link Location
Another important factor is where on the page the link is located. For example, a link placed in the footer of a website is less valuable than a link that is part of the main text on the page. The context, and number of other links on the same page also play a part.
–
For example, if your link is just one among hundreds a page consisting mainly of links, then it’s not very valuable. However, if the link is one of only a few integrated in the text flow, then it carries a lot of value.
–

Link Distribution
In a greater context, it also matters where your links are coming from. Hundreds of backlinks, all coming from the same domain are probably less valuable than just a handful of backlinks coming from many different sites.

–

Anchor Text

Finally, the anchor text of your links is what determines which keywords you will rank for. For those who don’t know, the anchor text is the text you click on, to follow a link. As an example, here is a link with the anchor text reading “Killer Bunnies”: Killer Bunnies

The anchor text of your backlinks help the search engine spiders decide which keywords to rank your page for. Ideally, you want to get many backlinks that have your targeted keyword as their anchor text. However, you should avoid getting many backlinks that all have the identical anchor text, because this looks unnatural.

For the links you build yourself, I recommend using your keywords in the anchor text in most cases, related keywords in some cases, and something completely unrelated (e.g. “Click here”) in a few cases.

–

Rule of Thumb

The rule of thumb for good backlink building is this: the more natural your backlink-profile looks, the better.

In other words, aim for diversity when you build backlinks. You can’t go wrong with links from different sites, using variations of anchor text and placed in different contexts on the sites.
Also, don’t shy away from getting links from low-authority sites. As long as it doesn’t take you too much time to get those links, even low value links are useful and make your overall link profile look more natural.

–

Video

Here’s the video, where I say the same stuff I wrote in this post:

We all know that we’re supposed to build links in order to get our pages ranking well in the Google results. But how exactly are we supposed to build those links? Of course, you can simply point every link you place in an article resource box, video description or on a bookmarking site at the same page. But there are some slightly more sophisticated strategies that allow you to get a lot more out of your link building efforts.
In this article and the accompanying videos, you’ll learn the basics about link wheels and link pyramids and I also show you the best (free) tool you can use to keep track of your backlink network.

bubbly Way to Keep Track of Your Link Network

This first video introduces you to bubbl.us, a free and easy to use online application that is actually meant for making mind-maps. It just so happens that it’s also extremely useful for keeping track of large link networks.

Growing Sites vs. Minisites

The second video is about the difference between growing sites (authority sites) and minisites. Distinguishing between these two is essential to how you set up your entire backlinking campaign.

Link Wheels

In this video, I explained what a link-wheel is, why it’s supposed to be good for backlink value and why I don’t believe that and therefore never build link- wheels.

Link Pyramids

In the video below, I talk about two different types of link pyramids: One of them is simply a way of categorizing links and the other is a link-building method that you can apply to your website promotion.

I hope you enjoyed these videos and would love to hear some feedback from you. If you have any further questions regarding link building strategies, please let me know. I would love to expand the video series to include some more strategies as well as answers to commonly asked questions.

Cheers,

What’s more important for ranking in Google, on-page or off-page optimization? On-page optimization is concerned with header tags, page titles and keyword density. Off-page optimization is concerned mainly with links pointing to your site and their anchor-text. You’ve probably encountered many opinions about which is more important. In today’s post, I want to introduce Grizzly Brears, a strong proponent of off-page optimization and George Brown, who’s product called Google Sniper is focused almost entirely around on-page optimization. Let’s see what we can get out of this little showdown.

The Bear and the Furniture Mover

Let me start off with a quick introduction of the two proponents I selected. On the one hand, you have Grizzly Brears, a very well known yet elusive online marketer who lives out in Alaska or somewhere like that. Off the map for most people, anyways. He has a blog, where he writes about how to make money online for beginners, and it’s definitely worth checking out. Grizz often emphasises how important it is to get backlinks to your site with optimized anchor texts. What this means is that if you want your website to rank well for the search-term “red fox video”, you want to get a lot of good backlinks that read red fox video.

To give you an example of his stance on SEO, here’s a quote from his blog:

To me SEO means just one thing – keyword targeted backlinks. That’s it. You don’t need to know another thing to rank well in the search engines.

There you go.

On the other side, we have George Brown, an 18-year old who allegedly went from being a furniture-mover to making a very comfortable full-time income from Internet marketing in a very short time. If he has a personal blog, I sure can’t find it, so I’ll just link to Google Sniper, which is his latest product. Google Sniper is an immensely successful info-product detailing George’s own method of building websites and monetizing them.

Here’s a snippet from the introduction in the Google Sniper manual:

…it means you won’t have to do any of the usual tedious work that’s associated with building SEO based sites. That’s right. You don’t need to do any link-building or endless content updating.

As you can see, that’s a pretty stark contrast right there. One says it’s all about backlinks, the other says you don’t need backlinks.

–

Examples (a.k.a. Proof)

Of course, there are examples that “prove” each of these standpoints. The one given by Griz is a great do-it-yourself one: Go to Google and type in “click here” as a search term. You’ll see that the number one ranked site for this keyword is Adobe (either the reader or the flash player download page). Now, go to that site and see if you can find any on-page optimization for the term “click here”.
You’ll see that it’s not in any title tags, it’s not in the page title and in fact, at the time of writing this, the words “click here” cannot be found anywhere at all on that page.

So clearly, those Adobe pages are not on-page optimized for the term “click here”. Yet they rank first out of millions of results. Why? Because from all around the web, people have links saying something like “if you can’t see this, click here to install the newest flash player”. Adobe’s pages are ranking number one and two in Google solely thanks to off-page factors.

What about the other philosophy, stating that on-page optimization matters a lot? Well, I can give you two examples showing how on-page optimization matters.

Another do-it-yourself one: Go to Google and type “hkcMjRm” as a search term. You’ll see the top spots pointing to the SEO 2.0 blog, or more specifically the post about using Google as a URL-shortener on that blog.
This is an extreme example, of course, since the letter combination hkcMjRm was specifically designed to be unique so that Google would always point to that post featuring it. Since the post became quite popular and people tweeted and wrote about it a lot, the SEO 2.0 post is no longer the only result, but it remains the top result. Analytics show that there are zero backlinks with the anchor-text “hkcMjRm”, however. In other words, the only thing Google goes by to rank that page is what it finds on-page.
-
So much for “proving” that on-page elements matter. But what about ranking for a real search term?
-

Let’s go back to that “click here” example and do a bit of a backlink analysis. Since I’m lazy, I had Keyword Elite 2 do the analysis for me. Here are the results:

First four positions (as of Dec. 12th 2009):

Rank:

Domain:

Page:

Nr. of Backlinks:

1

get.adobe.com

Adobe Reader (dl)

1’218’313

2

get.adobe.com

Adobe Flash Player (dl)

9’859’075

3

clickhere.com

Homepage

2’993

4

doubleclick.com

Privacy Policy

1’954

So far, so good. Obviously, the Adobe pages are completely dominating here, with millions of backlinks to each of them. And most of these are high-quality backlinks too, since many reputable and high-pr sites are pointing to those download pages. A million links from some crappy link-farms wouldn’t have the same effect, of course.

But let’s take a look at the next few results and we’ll see something rather interesting:

Rank:

Domain:

Page:

Nr. of Backlinks:

5

cnn.com

Breaking News (Videos)

781’990

6

adobe.com

Adobe Flash (info)

8’949’496

7

adobe.com

Adobe Reader (info)

245’036

8

apple.com

Quicktime Player (dl)

1’767’521

See what’s going on here? In positions three and four, we have two pages with a few thousand backlinks, while practically all the other page one entries have links in the millions or at least hudreds of thousands. How does a page with barely 3’000 backlinks outrank one with almost 9 Million backlinks? Again, this is an Adobe page with millions of links. Many of those are going to be coming in from very reputable sources and there’s no shady automated link-building or black hat business going on here. So, how is this possible?

Quite frankly, I don’t know, since I don’t work for Google’s algorithm programming team. What I do know is that www.clickhere.com does have some on-page optimization for the term “click here”. On the ranked page, it is featured in the page title, a couple of times in the text as well as in the meta keywords and meta description. No doubt this plays a part in where the page ends up in the results.

I’m not trying to make a case for either standpoint here, but I’m sure you can see that the above example could be used to make a strong case for on-page optimization. Just looking at the number of backlinks and on-page factors, one could argue that a little bit of on-page work has an equivalent effect to building millions of backlinks.

Don’t let anyone fool you with simple examples like this, however. It’s usually a bit more complicated than that.

–

Now What?

Simply put, we can clearly see that both on-page and off-page factors matter. And to be clear: No one really denies this. Grizz knows and admits that on-page factors can help and George Brown knows and clearly states that you can only rank for certain types of relatively non-competitive keywords without any backlinking whatsoever.

The big debate is generally about how much weight these factors should be given. At the end of the day, the question comes down to: “Should I spend my time optimizing the on-page factors or should I spend it building backlinks?”

You can’t do 100% of everything, so you have to set priorities. The purpose of this post is simply to untangle some of the confusion that can arise when you see how different the opinions of some of the SEO experts are.

The good thing about on-page optimization is that you can set most of it up just once (configure proper header and title-tags). When that’s all set, you can concentrate on the off-page optimization and you should get the best of both worlds. Bottom line is that building good, keyword targeted backlinks works. And so does the GSniper method, when it’s done right (more on that in an upcoming review).

I hope you enjoyed this post. All the best,

P.S.: I have also seen Brad Gosse using the “click here” example. I don’t know where it originated from, but Brad and Grizz aren’t the only prominent proponents of off-page SEO, just like George isn’t the first to suggest targeting low-competition keywords with good on-page optimization. But I had to pick someone, right?

EDIT: I managed to find George’s personal blog. See George’s Internet marketing blog right here.
